シャーデー Sade は、女性ボーカルのシャーデー・アデュ Sade Adu とバックの男性ミュージシャンから成るイギリスのバンド。私も、最初勘違いしていましたが、「負けないで」のZARD は、バンド名でボーカルの坂井泉水のことではないのと、一緒です。って、余計わからなくなるたとえですか。

1984年、デビュー・アルバム『ダイアモンド・ライフ Diamond Life 』が世界中でヒットし、グラミー賞の最優秀新人賞に輝いています。ジャズとＡＯＲ・ソウルを融合したようなサウンドはもちろん、アデュの落ち着いたミステリアスなボーカルにやられました。この、スムース・オペレーター Smooth Operator は、アルバムからのサード・シングルです。

Smooth Operator とは「スムーズにものごとをあつかうひと」＝「口が上手い、やり手の男性」という意味のようですが、曲中ではジェット機で世界中を飛び回る金持ちで、冷静で愛情もなく、かつ危険な匂いを漂わせている男？(滅多にお目にかかれませんが)のようです。ＭＶの中では、男は銃をもっていたり、警察から監視されているという、あぶない男のように描かれています。Smooth Operator は、けっして、褒め言葉ではないのでご注意ください。
