アニマルズ The Animals のギタリストのヒルトン・バレンタインさんの訃報が伝えられました。死因は明らかになっていませんが、所属のレコード会社が１月29日に発表しました。77歳だったそうです。忘れられない「朝日のあたる家」のギターリフ、ということで、今回は、アニマルズ の「朝日のあたる家 The House of the Rising Sun 」をピックアップします。

1963年に結成されたアニマルズは、伝統的なフォークソングだったこの曲を、バレンタインの印象的なエレキ・ギターによるアルペジオのリフ、アラン・プライスのキーボード・アレンジ、エリック・バードンのエモーショナルなヴォーカルによって、ブルース調のフォーク・ロックに生まれ変わらせました。イギリスやアメリカ・カナダ、もちろん日本でも大ヒットしています。

もともとは、ニューオリンズのセントルイス通りに実在した売春宿に働いていたマダム・ルソレイユ・ルヴァン(英語でRising Sun)の身の上話というのが定説。『恋人がギャンブラーだったために町から町を転々とし罪を犯して、最後は朝日楼という娼館にまで堕ちてしまった。』という話ですが、アニマルズは、アレンジだけでなく歌詞も男性の話しに変えているため、ストーリーが少しぼやけて、The House of the Rising Sun も少年院や刑務所という設定となっています。
