またまた、訃報です。ザ・ウェイラーズ The Wailers のオリジナルメンバー、バニー・ウェイラー Bunny Wailer が2021年3月2日に73歳で逝去しました。昨年7月から、脳卒中で入院していたそうですが、詳しい死因などは明らかにされていません。これで、ザ・ウェイラーズの主要メンバーだったボブ・マーリー、ピーター・トッシュ、バニー・ウェイラーが全員鬼籍に入ったことになります。寂しいかぎりです。

ということで今回は、バニー・ウェイラー Bunny Wailer 追悼。「ワン・ラヴ One Love」ザ・ウェイラーズ The Wailers をピックアップ。

「ワン・ラヴ One Love 」は、ボブ・マーリー&ザ・ウェイラーズのライブ・アルバム『エクソダス Exodus』（1977年）に収録され、1984年にはシングルとして発売されました。多くの方がご存じなのは、このヴァージョンだと思います。

ボブ・マーリー追悼のベストアルバム『レジェンド』（1984年）発売に合わせて制作されたミュージックビデオ。マーリーとロンドンを歩く少年の映像をメインにして、ポール・マッカートニーなどがチラリと顔を出していることでも話題になりました。ぶろっこりも、ＭＴＶで何度も繰り返して流れていたのを覚えています。その度にボブ・マーリーはもういないんだという苦い喪失感を味わったものです。まさに、「推し燃ゆ」どころか「推し消ゆ」ですね。

けれども実は、ウェイラーズのデビューアルバム『The Wailing Wailers』（1965年）で、「ワン・ラヴ/ピープル・ゲット・レディ One Love/People Get Ready」として発表されたものがオリジナルなんですね。この曲、インプレッションズの「ピープル・ゲット・レディ」（1965年）のコード進行とメロディの一部を引用しているため、「ワン・ラヴ/ピープル・ゲット・レディ」と表記されることもあります。

ウェイラーズは1972年、アイランド・レコードと契約しアルバム『キャッチ・ア・ファイア Catch a Fire』『バーニン Burnin’』を発表。世界的に注目される存在となりました。

その後、トッシュとウェイラーが脱退して解散。マーリーを中心としたボブ・マーリー&ザ・ウェイラーズの活動はご存じの通りですが、その一方でトッシュとウェイラーもソロとして活動を続けていました。

ウェイラーのソロアルバムも初期のウェイラーズを思い起こさせるサウンドがあって、気に入っていただけると思います。
