今回も、雨の日に聞きたい曲ということで、カーペンターズ Carpenters の「雨の日と月曜日は Rainy Days and Mondays 」をピックアップ。

フィフス・ディメンションのためにポール・ウィリアムズ Paul Williams とロジャー・ニコルズ Roger Nichols コンビが書いた曲を、デモ・テープを聴いたリチャードが気に入って取り上げたそうです。いい曲だとピンときたんでしょうね。前年にカヴァーした「愛のプレリュード We’ve Only Just Begun」と同じく、カレンのボーカルがピタッとハマってます。さすが、リチャード、わかってます。結果狙い通り、Billboard Hot 100で2位、イージー・リスニング・チャートでは4週間1位となるヒット曲になりました。

ポール・ウィリアムズ自身も、アルバム「Here Comes Inspiration」1974年で、この曲をセルフカヴァーしています。ちょっとクセのあるポールのボーカルもいいです。ぶろっこりみたいに、年齢を重ねると味わいも出てきますし。この枯れた感じが沁みます。

さりげない渋さでは、こちらも負けていません。アン・バートン Ann Burton のカヴァー。ジャージーなバラード・アルバム「雨の日と月曜日は Burton for Certain」2018年。

比べるのも何ですが。美しいメロデイを活かしたリチャードのアレンジに、この上なく優しいカレンのボーカル。やっぱり、こちらに軍配を上げざるを得ません。ロック全盛の時代に遅れてやってきたアメリカン・ポップスの精華。

以前、ロジャー・ニコルスとポール・ウイリアムズの特集したときに、この曲も紹介していましたが、今回もう一度取り上げました。ベタですが、雨の日と月曜日は、この曲を聞きたくなります。
