今回は、ジャニス・イアン Janis Ian の「スターズ Stars」をピックアップ。

70年代後半、日本でとても人気のあったジャニス・イアン Janis Ian をピックアップしています。彼女が活動を再開した1974年の６枚目のアルバム「ジャニスの私小説 Stars」のタイトル曲です。

アルバム「ジャニスの私小説 Stars 」(1974年) のＡ面最初の曲「スターズ Stars」。

アルバムのセルフ・ライナーには、自信を無くしていた彼女が「ディランからジョニー・マーサーまで、偉大なソングライターの作品を手当たり次第に聞き漁り、スタイルを確立するためにランボーからレイ・ブラッドベリまで、あらゆる作品を読みました。」と飾らずに書いています。そして、「スターズ Stars 」は、1971年にドン・マクリーンの「ヴィンセント Vincent 」を50回も60回も聴いたジャニスが、その夜のうちに２時間で書き上げた曲。「ヴィンセント」は、以前にこのブログでも取り上げました。そして、ロバータ・フラックの「やさしく歌って Killing me softly with this song」も、ドン・マクリーンの曲にインスパイアされてできた曲でしたよね。ドン・マクリーンすごいわ。

弾き語りのアコーステック・ギターのイントロが美しい。ゆっくりと切々と歌い上げた7分を超える大作です。
