前回、フィフス・ディメンション The 5th Dimension の「ビートでジャンプ Up Up And Away 」をピックアップしましたが、引き続き今回も名曲の「アクエリアス 輝く星座〜 レット・ザ・サンシャイン・イン Aquarius 〜 Let The Sunshine In 」を取り上げたいと思います。
フィフス・ディメンションのヒット曲「アクエリアス 輝く星座〜 レット・ザ・サンシャイン・イン Aquarius〜Let The Sunshine In」は、ロック・ミュージカル「ヘアー Hair」の挿入歌をメドレーにしたもので、1969年にグラミー賞最優秀レコード賞を獲得しています。
ミュージカル「ヘアー Hair」は、オフ・ブロードウェイ(1967年初演)、ブロードウェイ(1968年初演)で上演されたロック・ミュージカルの元祖。脚本と作詞はジェームズ・ラドとジェローム・ラグニ、音楽はガルト・マクダーモットが担当。ベトナム戦争の召集令状を受け取った若者と、自由を謳歌する70年代のヒッピー達の交流を描いた反戦・青春ミュージカル映画として1979年にミシェル・フォアマン監督が映画化しています。
オープニングを飾るのが「アクエリアス Aquarius 」。ヒッピーの根城となるセントラルパークで黒人女性が熱唱する「アクエリアス」は圧巻の映像美。響き渡る歌唱は、宇宙の広がりさえ感じさせる。まるで舞い降りた巫女のような歌声にのって、ヒッピー集団や警官、警官の乗る馬までがダンスを披露する映像は、見るものを圧倒すること間違いなし。 ぶろっこり にとっては懐かしさ100％のシーンですね。
エンディングにながれる 「輝く星座 Let The Sunshine In」
ブロードウエイで公演中のミュージカル「ヘアー」を見たフィフスディメンションが劇中の曲に感銘を受け、「アクエリアス」と「レット・ザ・サンシャイン・イン」をメドレーにして録音、切れのあるサウンドはハル・ブレインを初めとするレッキング・クルーの参加によるもの。この曲が彼らの代表作となったのも頷けます。
こちらが、5分弱のシングル・ヴァージョン。当時のシングル・レコードの録音時間は短く、かつ長い曲はラジオのDJが放送でかけたがらないので、7分余りの曲を短縮したそうです。

水瓶座の時代 Age of Aquarius は、西洋占星術のターム。約2000年ごとの周期で時代が大きく変わり、最近では魚座の時代から水瓶座の時代(イエスが言った人の子の時代)に入るという。ここでは、新しい時代が来るというような意味で使われているようですね。
