キャロル・キングが1973年5月26日、推定10万人を集めニューヨークのセントラル・パークでおこなった伝説の無料コンサートを収録したアルバム『ホーム・アゲイン：ライヴ・フロム・セントラル・パークHome Again Live From Central Park, New York City, May 26, 1973』が配信されました。50年間未発表だった作品です。当時の代表的な名曲とまもなくリリースされるアルバム『ファンタジー』から数曲を披露しています。ドキュメンタリー映像もアメリカで2月The Coda Collection／Amazon Prime Videoにて独占配信されます。セントラル・パークでのコンサートはいまでこそ珍しくはなくなりましたが、最初におこなった記念すべきパファーマンス、さっそく視聴しました。

ということで、今回は彼女の代表曲「イッツ・トゥー・レイト（心の炎も消え） It’s Too Late」 キャロル・キング Carole King をピック・アップ

「イッツ・トゥー・レイト（心の炎も消え）It’s Too Late」は、キャロル・キングの1971年の2ndアルバム「つづれおり Tapestry」からのシングル・カット。「空が落ちてくる I Feel the Earth Move」と両Ａ面でビルボード・ホット100では5週間連続1位、アダルトコンテンポラリーチャートでも1位を獲得しています。年間チャート第3位、ゴールド・ディスクに認定され、グラミー賞のレコード・オブ・ザイヤーを受賞した名曲です。

ただし、日本版ではＢ面が「ウィル・ユー・ラヴ・ミー・トゥモロー Will You Love Me Tomorrow」で発売されてました。ぶろっこりも、もちろん買いましたね。フォントが時代だね。

ぶろっこりはこの曲で初めてシンガーソングライターとしてのキャロル・キングを知ったと思います。ソングライターとしての曲はたくさん聞いていたんですが、それは後から知りました。

作詞のトニ・スターン Toni Stern は ジェームス・テイラーと別れた後一日でこの歌詞を書き、キャロル・キングが数時間で曲を付けて完成したといいます。当時としてはめずらしい女性が男性に別れを告げる大人の別れは、フェミニズムの香りがしますね。 20代のキャロルですが、けだるく、やさしく、真摯なヴォーカルが切ない。キャロルのピアノに、ダニー・コーチマー のギター、カーティス・エイミー のサクソフォンと演奏もいい感じでサポートしています。
