先週のサンソン（山下達郎のサンデー・ソングブック）は、「ボブ・ディランのかからないボブ・ディラン特集」でした。その選曲リストの中から、まだ取り上げていなかった「ミスター・タンブリン・マン Mr. Tambourine Man 」ザ・バーズ The Byrds をピックアップ。
1965年のバーズのデビュー・アルバム『ミスター・タンブリン・マン Mr. Tambourine Man 』と同名のシングルはいわゆるブリティッシュ・インヴェイジョンの先駆けと言われています。シングルは全米と全英チャートで1位を獲得、アルバムも全米6位、全英7位とバンドの最大ヒットになりました。
当時のぶろっこりは、ジム・マッギンのリッケンバッカー12弦ギターのイントロと複雑なハーモニーのフォーク・ロック・サウンドにぶっとびました。ラジオで初めて聞いた時にカッコイイ曲だなぁと思ったのを現在でもおぼえています。ボブ・ディランの「ミスター・タンブリン・マン」はまだ発表されていなかったので、ぶろっこりは「ミスター・タンブリン・マン」と言えばバーズと言う風に思い込んでました。「ミスター・タンブリン・マン」とは何のことなのかわかりませんでしたが、サビのところを呪文のように何度も歌ってましたね。

「ミスター・タンブリン・マン」とは、ディランが知り合いのギタリスト、ブルース・ラングホーン Bruce Langhorne に付けた渾名だそう。彼が持っていたトルコのフレームドラムという楽器がタンブリンに似ていたんだとか。ディランの難解な歌詞はぶろっこりには歯が立たないので和訳されている動画を参考にしてください。
ディラン自身はすでにコンサートで演奏していました。たとえば、1964年10月31日のニューヨークでの演奏は、アルバム『アット・フィルハーモニック・ホール』2004年 で聞くことができます。

アルバム『アナザー・サイド・オブ・ボブ・ディラン』1964年 で、この曲を録音していますがアルバムには収録されず、やっとアルバム『ブリンギング・イット・オール・バック・ホーム』1965年 に、ソロの弾き語りにブルース・ラングホーンのギターを被せたバージョンが収録されました。
今では、どちらかというとこちらの方が良く流されているかもしれませんね。
ディラン節もやっぱりいい。
