今回は タートルズ The Turtles の全米1位を記録した大ヒット曲「ハッピー・トゥゲザー Happy Together 」1967年 をピックアップ。
1967年1月にシングルとしてリリースされるとビートルズの「ペニー・レイン」を蹴落として3週連続の全米1位を記録。カナダでも1位に。年間チャート8位という素晴らしい大ヒット曲になりました。
サード・アルバム『Happy Together』1967年 に収録。
タイトルは 「ハッピー・トゥゲザー」ですが、作者のゲイリー・ボナーによると想像するだけで報われない恋の歌ということ。よく歌詞を読むとほとんど主人公の想像なんです。最後のリフレインの How Is The Weather は、もちろん Happy together と韻を踏んでいるのですが、報われない恋を悟った主人公が無理に口にした世間話というイメージなんだそうです。マイナーで始まり転調するところがいいですよね。

タートルズはアメリカ西海岸でハワード・カイランとマーク・ボルマンを中心に結成されたグループ。ボブ・ディランのカヴァー「悲しきベイブ It Ain’t Me Babe 」が全米8位のヒットでデビュー。

その後はヒットに恵まれなかったのですが、ようやくこの「ハッピー・トゥゲザー」が大ヒット。
もともとはニューヨークのバンド「マジシャンズ The Magicains 」のゲイリー・ボナーとアラン・ゴードンがデモ音源を製作、これを聞いたタートルズのベーシストのチップ・ダグラスが見事にアレンジ。のちにチップはタートルズを辞めてモンキーズのプロデューサーになりあの「デイドリーム・ビリーバー」をアレンジして大ヒットさせていますね。
