今回も1972年つながりで、シカゴ Chicago の「サタデイ・イン・ザ・パーク Saturday in the Park 」をピックアップ。
シカゴ Chicago と言っても、ソフト・ロック、ＡＯＲ路線ではなく、ブラス・ロックの頃のヒット曲。1969年のデビュー曲「クエスチョンズ67/68 Questions ’67 and ’68 」1970年の大ヒット「長い夜 25 Or 6 To 4」に続くヒット曲。アルバム・チャート1位となった1972年の『シカゴ5 Chicago V』に収録。シングル「サタデイ・イン・ザ・パーク Saturday in the Park」はビルボード3位を記録し、ゴールドディスクにも認定されています。作詞作曲はこの曲を歌っているロバート・ラム Robert William Lamm。
「サタデイ・イン・ザ・パーク Saturday in the Park」の曲名通り、アメリカ独立記念日（7月4日）のニューヨークの公園 セントラル・パーク Central Park の様子が描かれています。

土曜日の公園
確か7月4日だったと思う
土曜日にセントラル・パークで
独立記念日だった
人々は踊ったり笑ったりしてる
アイスクリーム売りの男は

別の日の公園

そんな日が来るのを
1番の歌詞のように7月4日が土曜日になるのは1970年で、この曲が発売された1972年7月当時はベトナム戦争も末期でした。戦争が終わった後の公園を夢見て歌ったのでしょうかね。
なお、途中に出てくるイタリア語の Eh Cumpari, ci vo sunari は、「おい、一緒に歌ってよ」というような意味で、ジュリアス・ラ・ローザ Julius La Rosa の「Eh Cumpari」1953年の冒頭の歌詞だそうです。
