秋が来たとか来ないとか言っているうちに師走も半ばになってしまいました。早いもんです。そろそろクリスマスも近いので今週はそれっぽい曲をセレクトしてお届けします。70年代の懐かしい曲が続きますが、今回は1971年の大ヒット、懐かしさMAXの「サインはピース Put your hand in the hand 」オーシャン Ocean をピックアップ。
オーシャン Ocean の「サインはピース Put your hand in the hand」は、70年代ポップスの名曲。当時のラジオ番組、文化放送 『オール・ジャパン・ポップ20』でスリー・ドッグ・ナイトの「喜びの世界Joy to the World」を抑えてNo.1になったのが「サインはピース」でした。今でも覚えていますが、赤丸急上昇なんて言ってヒット・チャートを賑わせ、3週連続1位の記録を残しました。同じカナダ勢のオリジナル・キャストも活躍していた頃でしたね。
70年代前半のベトナム戦争時期、反戦や平和を求めるヒッピー・ムーヴメントの流れで、賛美歌的なモチーフがロックやポップスという形で取り上げられていました。「サインはピース」という邦題もそこからつけられたのではないでしょうか。作曲は同じ力ナダのジーン・マクレラン、オリジナルはアン・マレーになりますが、オーシャンのカヴァーがミリオン・ヒットしました。
オーシャンは、1970年にカナダのゴスペル・ロックバンド。メンバーは、グレッグ・ブラウンGreg Brown（ヴォーカル、キーボード）、ジェフ・ジョーンズJeff Jones（ベース、ヴォーカル）、ジャニス・モーガンJanice Morgan（ギター、ヴォーカル）、デイヴ・タンブリンDave Tamblyn（ギター）、チャック・スレイターChuck Slater（ドラム）。カナダとアメリカのKama Sutraレーベルからアルバムをリリース。カナダでヒットした「I’ve Got a Dream」以外はパッとせず、2枚のアルバムを残して1975年に解散しています。

歌詞はゴスペルgospel調で宗教的なんですけど、軽快なフォークの演奏にジャニス・モーガンのさわやかなヴォーカルが魅力的で、当時聴いていたチャートの中でも全然硬い感じがしませんでした。それがアメリカでも最高2位のミリオンセラーとなった理由かもしれません。
さてさて、いつものぶろっこり訳です。

聖書を手にすると震える

この歌詞は、次のような聖書のエピソードを元にしてつくられています。
大工のヨセフとマリアの子どもだったイエス・キリストが、ガリラヤ湖を弟子たちと船で渡っていると嵐に襲われ、イエスが静まれと命じると嵐は止んで湖も穏やかになったという話。また、エルサレムの神殿を訪れたとき、信仰を食い物にしている「両替商」などの商人たちを神殿から追い払ったという話。
