今回は、「愛しのルネ ウォーク・アウェイ・ルネ Walk Away Renee 」レフト・バンク The Left Banke をピックアップ。
「いとしのルネ Walk Away Renée」は、レフト・バンク The Left Banke の1966年のヒット曲。チャートの最高は5位でしたが13週間にわたってチャート・インしています。作詞作曲は、バンドのメンバーであるマイケル・ブラウン Michael Brown、トニー・サンソン Tony Sansone、ボブ・カリーリ Bob Calilli の共作となっています。
ブリッジで流れるフルート・ソロのアイデアは、当時ヒットしていたママス&パパスの「夢のカリフォルニア」から思いついたとか。クラシックのスリトングスやハープシコード（チェンバロ）・ベースなどを使用したことから「バロック・ポップ」などとよばれました。
カヴァー・バージョンとしては、フォー・トップス The Four Tops のバージョンが有名です。1967年のアルバム『Reach Out』に収録され、 全米最高14位、全英3位のヒットを記録しています。
ぶろっこりのお気に入りは、リッキー・リー・ジョーンズのカヴァー。1983年のアルバム『Girl at Her Volcano』に収録されています。曲名は Letters from the 9th ward / Walk Away Rene となっていますが、最初の短いピアノ・インストゥルメンタルが Letters from the 9th ward 、9th wardは彼女が当時住んでいたニューオリンズの地名だそうです。
変わったところでは、日本のピンク・レディーが1979年に全世界で発売したシングル「Kiss In The Dark」のB面でこの曲を歌っています。知らないひとが多いですけど、結構売れました。

毎日通り過ぎていた一方通行の標識の横を、今歩き去るルネ、君のせいではないけれど、君がいなくなった街は以前と違って見える
歌詞もいいですね。たくさんのカヴァーがあるのも頷けます。
リンダ・ロンシュタット Linda Ronstadt とアン・サヴォイ Ann Savoy も、2006年のアルバム『Adieu False Heart』でカヴァーしています。
