今回は、スターシップ Starship の「シスコはロック・シティ We Built This City 」と「セーラ Sara」をピックアップ。

「シスコはロック・シティ We Built This City」は、スターシップ Starship が1985年にリリースした大ヒット曲。当時はMTVでヘビロテされるわ、日本のFMなどでもで繰り返し流れていて耳たこ状態でした。それにしても邦題が「シスコはロック・シティ」というのはちょっとわからない。たぶんスターシップの前身ジェファーソン・エアプレンがサンフランシスコ出身のバンドだからでしょうかね。

「シスコはロック・シティ We Built This City」はスターシップとなって初のシングルで、全米1位を獲得。アルバム『フープラ Knee Deep in the Hoopla』収録。

リード・ボーカルはミッキー・トーマスとグレイス・スリック。間奏中のDJボイスで歌われる The City By the Bay はサンフランシスコ、The City That Rocks はクリーブランド、The City That Never Sleeps はニューヨークを指しているそうです。

大ヒットしたにもかかわらず、ローリング・ストーン誌の”The 10 Worst Songs of the 1980s”では堂々の1位に。ジェファーソン・エアプレン時代と比べるファンが多かったのでしょうかねぇ。

今回も和訳付きの動画がありましたので、こちらをどうぞ。どうも商業主義のロックを批判しているように聞こえますね。Marconi はラジオを発明したひとで mamba は毒蛇のことですが、この中では毒のある音楽としてロックと訳されています。

「セーラ Sara」も全米1位を記録、この曲もアルバム『フープラ』収録。リード・ボーカルはミッキー・トーマス。こちらもあちこちでよく流れていました。モノクロで始まるMVも印象的でした。
