ボブ・マーレーと並んで初期のレゲエというジャンルを全世界に普及させた歌手・俳優のジミー・クリフが肺炎で死去しました。81歳。

ジミー・クリフはジャマイカの国民的レゲエ・シンガー。1944年生まれ。14歳でデビュー作の「ハリケーン・ハッティー」がジャマイカのチャート1位を獲得。その後ロンドンへ渡り、R＆Bを取り入れたアルバムを制作。1972年主演を務めた映画「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」は世界中でヒット。自身の楽曲を含むサウンドトラックもヒットし、米国をはじめ全世界にレゲエを広めた。「ユー・キャン・ゲット・イット・イフ・ユー・リアリー・ウォント」「ザ・ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」「ワンダフル・ワールド、ビューティフル・ピープル」や1993年の映画「クール・ランニング」の主題歌「アイ・キャン・シー・クリアリー・ナウ」などのヒット曲があります。

「レゲエ」というジャマイカの音楽が、まだ世に知られていなかった頃、わたしたちに、その存在を強烈にアピールしてくれたのが、ジミー・クリフ Jimmy Cliff 主演のジャマイカ映画「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム The Harder They Come」とエリック・クラプトン Eric Claptonが、アルバム「461 Ocean Boulevard (1974) 」でカバーした「I Shot The Sheriff」でした。そして、レゲエのリズムにわたしたちは完全にノックアウトされたのです。

「ハーダー・ゼイ・カム」はたくましい歌だけど、「遥かなる河 Many Rivers To Cross」はしみじみくるなぁ。

「遥かなる河」は、1969年、ジミー・クリフが21歳の頃に書いた曲。「渡るべき河は多く、信念だけを頼りにおれは生きてきた。過ぎゆく歳月に流されながらも何とか生きてきた。誇りだけを胸に」という歌詞の通り、大きな夢を抱いてジャマイカからイギリスへと渡ったが、仕事や生活がうまく行かず困難な時期に書かれたと言われる歌詞が胸を打つ。
