今回も、映画ネタです。以前、映画「ペット Pets 」の中で使われていた曲を紹介しましたが、続編の映画「ペット2 Pets 2 」を最近やっと見ることができました。(あまり映画館に行くことがなくて、新しい映画は基本観てないです。(^▽^) 映画は、もっぱら Amazon Prime Video です。) さて、映画の内容も良かったんですが、その中で使用されていて、気になったのが、ジャック・アントノフ Jack Antonoff の「Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard」とケビン・ハート Kevin Hart の「Panda」です。

『ポール・サイモン Paul Simon 』は、サイモン&ガーファンクル解散後にポール・サイモンが初めてつくったソロアルバム。(その前につくった『ポール・サイモン・ソングブック』はながらく廃盤とされていたため、実質的に初のアルバム。)
サイモン&ガーファンクルが解散してショックだったのですが、このアルバムもショッキングでした。ポールのソロの作品がどのようなものかわくわくしてレコードをきいたファンも、ビックリしたことでしょう。これまでのS&Gのサウンドとはぜんぜん違うサウンドだったんです。いまでこそ、スカやレゲエもなじみがありますが、ポールの音楽にたいする貪欲な関心は､当時の私たちにかなりのショックを与えて賛否両論でしたね。

さて、歌詞の方もわかりやすいとは言えないですね。当時のわたしには、早口言葉みたいでした。

『ローリング・ストーン』1972年7月20日号でジョン・ランドー（Jon Landau）はサイモンに歌詞の意味を尋ねた。
ランドー 「ママが見たものって一体何だったんですか？ 今世界中が知りたがっています」
サイモン 「それが何なのかなんて僕には分からない」
ランドー 「4人の人間が私に言ったんです。お前が真っ先に聞くべきはこのことだと」
サイモン 「何か性的なものじゃないかとは思うけれど、僕がその『何か』を答えたとしてもみんなの理解をわざわざ妨げるつもりはないよ。どちらでもいいことだから」
山崎まさよしは、「僕とフリオと校庭で」をもじって「僕と不良と校庭で」って曲書いてますね。こちらもしっとりとした、いい曲です。

歌詞とは関係ないけど、「僕とフリオと校庭で」は、わけもわからなく怖い？漫画にもなっていますね。諸星大二郎先生には、失礼ですが。
このアルバムからもう1曲。こちらも、イントロが耳にこびりつきます。
母と子の絆 – Mother and Child Reunion
ソロとして最初のヒット曲「母と子の絆 Mother and Child Reunion 」の歌詞も、難しい言葉はないものの意味がつかみにくくて、英語が母語の人も ちょっと聞いただけでは何がなんだかわからないようです。
ポール自身が、さきほどの『ローリング・ストーン』誌のインタビューで「歌のタイトルは、中華料理の店で食べたことのある、鳥と卵の料理名に由来している。飼っていた犬が死んだんだ、たった今までそこにいたのに、次の瞬間には居なくなっている。それがもし、ペギー（当時の妻）だったらどうしよう。死って何だろう。死とペギーの結びつきがかなうとしたら、天国のようなところかな。」と言っているそうなので、「死」をイメージして書いた曲であることは間違いないでしょう。そしてなんとなく、ビートルズの「レット・イット・ビー Let it be 」を思い出すのも、わたしだけではないと思います。

I can’t for the life of me ～ は慣用句で、「私は一生 ～できない」という表現ということです。よく使われる I just can’t 〜 と同じような感じでしょうか。
母と子どもが再会 Reunion できるのは、天国だけなんでしょうか。only a moment away ほんのちょっと先 って、そういうことなのかなあ。
