また、ロックンロール初期から活躍しているスターの訃報が届きました。ジェリー・リー・ルイス2022年10月28日、87歳で逝去。ということで今回は、「火の玉ロック Great Balls of Fire 」ジェリー・リー・ルイス Jerry Lee Lewis をピックアップして、ジェリー・リー・ルイス追悼。
あんまりロックンロールは聴かないという方でもこの曲とピアノは耳に覚えがあるのでは。カール・パーキンス、ファッツ・ドミノなどが出演した1957 年のロックンロール映画「ジャンボリー」で取り上げられ、大ヒットしたナンバーがこれ。アメリカで、なんとリリース後 10 日で 100 万部を売り上げたというNo.1シングルです。ロックンロール・スタイルのピアノがイカしてます。

映画ファンの方には、1986年の映画「トップガン」の劇中で演奏された曲、また今年2022 年に話題になった続編「トップガン: マーベリック」でも演奏された曲といった方が早いかもしれません。
ギターが中心だった当時のロックンロール・シーンの中で、ピアノに注目をさせた白人ピアニストで、座っていた椅子を蹴飛ばしたり、足で鍵盤を弾いたり、ピアノに乗っかったりと山下洋輔顔負けのパフォーマンスで大人気になります。下の動画は後年のステージですが、まったく衰えていませんね。

さて、タイトルのball of fire は、そのまま火の玉という言葉ですが、「やり手、敏腕家」の意味やスラングで、早々と出世していく人(someone whose career progresses rapidly)とか、非常に精力的で疲れを知らない人(a highly energetic and indefatigable person)という使い方があるそうです。ここでは、そのまま火の玉と訳しておきましたが、もっちょっとセクシャルな意味なのかもしれません。
スキャンダラスな出来事で一時期人気は衰えましたが、その後もコンスタントに活動を続け、カントリー・ミュージックで大人気となり数々のシングルやアルバムをヒットさせています。また、2000年以降も『Last Man Standing』『Mean Old Man』『Rock & Roll Time』等のコラボレーション・アルバムによって再評価されることになりました。それは、また別の機会に取り上げたいと思います。
最後に、ぶろっこりの好きなサン・レコード時代のセッション。ジェリー・リー・ルイス、カール・パーキンス、ジョニー・キャッシュとエルヴィス・プレスリーが共演した1956年12月のいわゆる「ミリオン・ダラー・カルテット」の録音をどうぞ。みんなロックンロールが好きなんですね。ほんとに楽しんでやってる感じがたまらないです。
