今回は、「ミスター・マンディ Mr.Monday 」オリジナル・キャスト The Original Caste をピックアップ。
70年代の洋楽ファンならきっと覚えているはず、イントロにサビの「オー・ミスター・マンディ・ミー・オー・マイ・・・」と伸びやかに歌う女性ヴォーカルとコーラス。そうカナダ出身のフォーク・ロック・グループ、オリジナル・キャストThe Original Caste の「ミスター・マンディ Mr.Monday 」は日本で大ヒット。このドラマチックなメロディーは一度聞いたら忘れられませんね。
メンバーは、ブルース・イネス Bruce Innes とディクシー・リー・イネス Dixie Lee Innes を中心に、ブルース・マッキー Bliss Mackie グラハム・ブルース Graham Bruce ピーター・ブラウン Peter Brown 。
1969年、シングル「天使の兵隊 One Tin Soldier 」をリリースすると、これが全米のトップ40入りするヒットなりました。
歌詞を見るといわゆる反戦歌。映画化されたり、なんどもカヴァーされたりしています。天使の兵隊の邦題はどうもいただけませんが。

日本では1970年に発売されたシングル「ミスター・マンディ Mr.Monday 」が45万枚を売り上げ、ラジオのヒットチャートで6週1位を独走する大ヒットに。
タイトルや歌詞のミスター・マンディは人名と思われますが、弱者の声に耳を貸さない金持ちの権力者にふさわしい憂鬱なイメージの「月曜日」を当てているのだと思います。カーペンターズ Carpenters「雨の日と月曜日は Rainy days and Mondays always get me down」、ママス＆パパス The Mamas & Papas「マンディ・マンディ Monday Monday 」、デュラン・デュラン Duran Duran「ニュー・ムーン・オン・マンディ New Moon On Monday」、ブームタウン・ラッツ The Boomtown Rats「哀愁のマンディ I Don’t Like Mondays 」、バングルズ Bangles「マニック・マンディ Manic Monday 」などもそんな感じですね。月曜日は嫌われ者か。

第３弾「愛する未来に歌おう Leaving it all behind 」は、日本でのみのリリース。
1970年にはカーペンターズと共に第１回東京国際歌謡音楽祭に出演、翌年には来日公演も行うほどの人気でした。
けれどもヒット曲を連発していたデニス・ランバート Dennis Lambert とブライアン・ポッター Brian Potter がダンヒルレコードに移籍して、ポール・ウィリアムスとロジャー・ニコルズのコンビが担当しましたが売れずに1971年に解散。
