前々回の口笛ソングでどちらの番組でもリストに入っていた曲、超人気曲なので今更だけど今回ピックアップ。「ストレンジャー The Stranger」ビリー・ジョエル Billy Joel 。

「ストレンジャー The Stranger」は、同名アルバム『ストレンジャー The Stranger』1977年の収録曲ですが全米ではシングルとして発売はされていません。しかし日本ではソニーのラジカセ「ZILBA-P」のCMに起用されて人気を呼び、「ムーヴィン・アウト Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)」とのカップリングでシングル・カットされました。すると洋楽としては異例の50万枚以上を売上げて、オリコン総合チャート2位を記録。（ちなみに1位はピンク・レディーの「モンスター」）当然、洋楽の年間セールスでは1位でした。やっぱり哀愁のあるメロディにしろ、イントロとアウトロの口笛にしろ、テンポアップした部分の爽快感にしろ、都会的なアレンジにしろ、何というか日本人の琴線に触れる曲だったんでしょうね。また、ビリー本人がフレーズを説明するために吹いた口笛を、プロデューサーのフィル・ラモーンが気に入ってそのまま使用したというエピソードもファンには有名でしょう。

アルバム『ストレンジャー The Stranger』は、全米アルバムチャート2位を記録。1000万枚を売り上げ、あのサイモン&ガーファンクルの『明日に架ける橋』よりも売れたそうです。また、ファースト・シングルの「素顔のままで Just the Way You Are」は、グラミー賞・最優秀レコード賞を受賞しています。
