今回は、「悲しき天使 Those Were The Days 」メリー・ホプキン Mary Hopkin をピックアップ。

「悲しき天使」、ぶろっこりと同年代の方だったら絶対知ってる大ヒット曲です。原題は Those Were The Days ですが、悲しき天使というこの邦題は「悲しき○○」というタイトルの曲がヒットしたことにあやかってつけられたのでしょう。「悲しき街角」「悲しき雨音」「悲しきインディアン」これまでこのブログでもたくさん紹介してきました。ほんとに、いったいどれくらいあるんだろう。ちょつと、調べたくなるくらいです。いや、調べませんけど。

さて、「悲しき天使」の原曲はロシア語の「長い道」という1920代につくられた古い歌だそうです。この長く歌い継がれてきた曲を、なんと1968年にビートルズのポール・マッカートニーが気に入って、アップル・レーベルの新人メリー・ホプキン Mary Hopkin に新しいアレンジと歌詞で歌わせました。結果ビートルズがつくったアップル・レーベルの第１弾が、世界的なヒットになったわけですね。ポールすごいなぁ。詳しい経緯は、wiki　悲しき天使　をご覧ください。って、手抜きですが諸説あります的な世界みたいです。

こちらは、ファースト・アルバム『Post Card』

メリー・ホプキンはもともとこのアルバムのように、トラディショナル・ソングやフォーク、クラシックな音楽のカバーを志向していたようですが、「悲しき天使」のヒットによりポップス路線を強いられることになった訳です。しばらくして、アップル・レーベルを去ることになります。いわゆる音楽的志向の違いというやっですね。好きな曲と人気のある曲が違うと言うことですけどね。

もともとロシア語の歌詞は失恋ソングだったようです。このメロディですから当然切ない歌ですよね。けれど、英語詞の方はごらんのように昔を懐かしんだりするほろ苦い大人の回顧を綴っています。

いつものぶろっこり訳です。といいたいところですが、すばらしい日本語訳がありました。いつもお世話になっております。

この曲当然カヴァーもたくさんあるのですが、ぶろっこり的には、こちらが懐かしい。

森山良子の日本語詞のカヴァー。ヴィッキーとともに競作でヒットしたのも記憶に残っています。
