ようやく、寒さも緩んで春めいてきました。そこで、今回は「春」っぽい感じのほんわかウキウキするような曲をピックアップしてみました。アメリカのシンガーソングライター、 ヴァネッサ・カールトン Vanessa Carlton の代表曲、「サウザンド・マイルズ A Thousand Miles 」。結婚式なんかにもよく使われていますので、聞いたことあると言う人も多いはず。特徴のある「少しねっとりとした発音」と「印象的なピアノ伴奏」が耳に残る爽やかな感じの曲です。いつまでも聞いていたくなります。
デビューアルバムの「Be Not Nobody」2002 に収録、シングルとしてリリースされると、USビルボード5位、UKシングルス6位、オーストラリア1位と世界中でヒットを記録。グラミー賞2003でも、最優秀レコード賞、ソング・オブ・ザ・イヤーと2つの部門にノミネートされました。

いかがですか？少し切ない内容ですが、まっすぐな愛情をつづった歌詞がすてきです。結婚式で使われるのもわかりますね。
日本でも話題になったアメリカのTVドラマ「Glee」の中でも使われていたそうです。
この和訳つきのビデオクリップは、まさに結婚式に流されそうな映像と訳です。
のびやかなメロディの曲ですが、この歌詞をじっくりと読むと失恋ソングなのかな？と最初に思いました。ところが、調べてみると、実は大切な人(家族)を亡くした時にできた曲なんだそうです。以前紹介した The End Of The World と同じ状況なのですが、この曲には悲しみとともに大切な人に対する結びつきや愛情も強く感じられます。
サビの「Cause you know I’d walk a thousand miles if I could just see you, tonight もし今夜あなたに会えるのなら、1,000マイルだって歩いていけるわ」は、死んでしまった大切な人に会いたいという「あつい想い」が歌われているのでしょうか。さらに、If I could fall into the sky Do you think time would pass me by? Do you think time would pass us by? の部分は、単に時が過ぎるだけではなく、時を追い越したり（新しい時を生きる）時をさかのぼったり（あなたのいた過去に戻る）するようにさえ感じてしまいます。少し変わった表現で受け取り方も人によるかもしれません。
こちらの和訳はどうでしょうか？そんなイメージがあると少し違って聞こえますね。
