今回は、ドン・マクリーン Don McLean の「アメリカン・パイ American Pie」をピックアップ。

以前ドン・マクリーンのヴィンセントを紹介したときにも書きましたが、ドン・マクリーン Don McLean と言えば「アメリカン・パイ American Pie」これは間違いありませんね。ぶろっこりと同年代の方は、曲が長すぎて1曲聴くのにシングル盤のＡ・Ｂ面をひっくり返さなければいけなかったとか、メラニーの「心の扉をあけよう」やRCサクセションの「僕の好きな先生」、遠藤賢司の「カレーライス」などと一緒にラジオの深夜放送で聴いてたとか、浅間山荘事件の映像とダブっているとかあるんじゃないでしょうか。絶対、印象に残っているフォークの名曲だと思います。このシングル盤のジャケット写真や文字も懐かしい。このフォントなんて言うんでしょうか。当時よく使われていました。当然、ビルボードでは4週間ランキング第1位、1972年の年間ランキングでも第3位となる大ヒット曲です。

前回、ロックンロールのはじまりと、衰退について簡単にふれました。実はこの曲は、そのロックンロール・ミュージックが死んだ日のことを歌った曲なんですね。

５０年代初めから、大流行していたロックンロールですが、1958年頃になると流行に陰りが差し始めます。エルヴィス・プレスリーの徴兵、ＤＪのアラン・フリードの不祥事による失脚、そして1959年2月のバディ・ホリー、リッチー・ヴァレンス、ビッグ・ボッパーの飛行機による死亡事故です。のちに「音楽が死んだ日」と呼ばれるこの悲劇は、ロックンロールが低迷した時期の出来事として記憶されることになります。その後、1960年代のイギリスのビートルズを中心とするブリティッシュ・インヴェイジョンまで、ロックンロールはスター不在の時期を過ごすことになる訳です。

音楽が死んだ日（おんがくがしんだひ）は、小型飛行機がアイオワ州クリアレイク近郊に墜落し、バディ・ホリー Buddy Holly、リッチー・ヴァレンス Ritchie Valens、J.P.”ビッグ・ボッパー Big Bopper” リチャードソンの3人のミュージシャンとパイロットのロジャー・ピータースンの4人全員が亡くなる事故が起こった1959年2月3日を指す通称である。

「音楽が死んだ日」という通称は、ドン・マクリーンがこの悲劇を題材にした楽曲「アメリカン・パイ」のなかで、この出来事を「音楽が死んだ日」（The Day the Music Died）として歌ったことにより定着したものである。

繰り返されるコーラスの Miss American Pie は、「Mr. Apple Pie America 典型的なアメリカ人」からきた言葉で、 Chevy は、車の Chevrolet シボレーですが、徴兵所 levy と堤防 levee の両方の意味と音をかけているという説も。

海外でも、この歌詞の専用のサイトまであるそうですから、正解は風の中にあるのでしょう。
