今回は、マンゴ・ジェリーMungo Jerry イン・ザ・サマータイム In The Summertime をピックアップ。
「イン・ザ・サマータイム」は1970年に全英1位、全米3位の他26の国で1位になったという世界的な大ヒット曲です。耳に残る単純なリズムとメロディ。イヤー・ワームがうじゃうじゃ。でも、ぶろっこりこの曲しかしりません。いわゆる一発屋的なグループなのかな。
演奏のスタイルが変わっていますよね。これは、マンゴ・ジェリーのメンバーがスキッフルが好きなので、こんなスタイルでやってみたということです。スキッフルというアメリカの音楽で、洗濯板や水差し、洗濯桶や茶箱で作ったベースなど手作りの楽器とギターで演奏します、だからMV(ミュージックビデオ)でも、メンバー全員が足を踏み鳴らしています。つまり、ドラムがいないんです。変わった演奏スタイルの音楽ですが、1950年代のイギリスでブームになったとか。
また、マンゴ・ジェリーというグループ名は、T.S.エリオットの詩「キャッツ – ポッサムおじさんの猫とつき合う法 Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats」（ミュージカル「キャッツ」の原作）にでてくる泥棒猫のコンビ、マンゴジェリーとランプルティーザーからとったそうです。キャッツをご覧になった方は覚えていらっしゃるかもしれません。

音楽同様、お気楽な感じのする歌詞ですね。でも、楽しそうです。
ただし、この曲の英語歌詞は、幾通りもあってどれが正しいのか良くわかりませんでした。とくにオリジナルの歌詞は、とんでもないものが多かったです。一番意味が通りそうなものを訳してみました(^_^)。
Speed along the lane, do a turn or return to 25 の部分がわからなかったのでぐぐってみたら、 speed along the lane do a ton or a ton and twenty five.が正解ではないかという記事がありました。 イギリスでは、 hitting a ton で、速度が100マイルになるという意味だそうです。

In British culture ‘hitting a Ton’ is reaching the heady heights of 100 miles per hour, it started with cafe racer bikes and stuck when cars became more available. Bear in mind this was when cars and bikes were lethal at that speed – with poor handling, little safety and no computer assistance.Ergo, hitting a ton and twenty-five is 125mph.
