少しは過ごしやすい日もありますが、まだまだ暑い夏が続いています。ということで今回は、さわやかなリズムに乗ったコーラスとメロディがとても印象的な曲、「ビートでジャンプ Up Up And Away 」フィフス・ディメンション The 5th Dimension をピックアップ。永遠のポップスとでも呼びたい曲です。
フィフス・ディメンションは五人組の黒人コーラス・グループで、黒いママス＆パパスなどとも呼ばれ、あまりＲ＆Ｂっぽくない感じのさわやかなコーラスが特徴ですかね。

大ヒットとなったタイトル曲のシングル「Up Up and Away」。
フィフスディメンションの最初のシングル「Train Keep On Moving / I’ll Be Loving You Forever」こそヒットしませんでしたが、デビュー・アルバムからのシングルカットされた「Go Where You Wanna Go」はチャート16位のヒット。この曲は、ママス＆パパスのカヴァーでした。続いてセカンド・シングルの「Another Day, Another Heartache」もチャート45位と健闘。そして、サード・シングルの「Up Up and Away」が、1967 年グラミー賞の５部門を獲得する大大ヒットとなります。この曲のヒットで、グループだけでなく作詞・作曲・編曲を手がけたジミー・ウェッブも一躍トップ・スターの仲間入りをしました。
1967年は、ポップスの当たり年と言っていいくらい大ヒットした曲がそろっています。たとえばフランキー・ヴァリの「君の瞳に恋してる」やモンキーズの「デイドリーム・ビリーバー」ヤング・ラスカルズの「グルーヴィン」などなど。その中でグラミー賞レコード・オブ・ジ・イヤーとソング・オブ・ジ・イヤーを獲得したんですから、すごいですよね。

原題の「Up Up And Away」は、直訳すると「高く、高く、遠くへ」という意味になります。気球に乗って誰もいない高い空に行こうという内容にピッタリです。canopy は、天蓋と訳されますが、ひさしや大空を表すこともある言葉です。ここでは、空として訳してみました。
来日記念のシングル「ピートでジャンプ」。Ｂ面は、ティケット・トゥ・ライド。
フィフス・ディメンションといえば、「アクエリアス〜輝く星座 Aquarius 〜 Let The Sunshine In 」という名曲もあります。ぶろっこりも大好きです。この曲もまた、別の回に取り上げたいと思います。
