イギリスのロック・バンド 「クイーン Queen」 とフレディ・マーキュリー Freddie Mercury の半生を描いた映画「ボヘミアン・ラプソディー」が先日公開されました。それを記念して、今回は、名曲「ボヘミアン・ラプソディー」を取り上げたいと思います。
「ボヘミアン・ラプソディ」 Bohemian Rhapsody Queen 1975
アルバム『オペラ座の夜』に収録された Freddie Mercury フレディ・マーキュリー作の楽曲。演奏時間が6分と長かったのですが、シングルカットされ、世界中で大ヒットしました。本国イギリスのシングルチャートでは9週連続1位を獲得、イギリスで最も売れた曲とされています。フレディの圧倒的な歌唱力に加えて、曲の構成もオペラ風で、冒頭から順にアカペラ・バラード・オペラ・ハードロック・バラード（繰り返し）と、まるでゴシック様式のような荘厳なつくりになっています。ライヴでも再現できなかったというコーラス部の録音は、オーバーダビングとピンポン録音を繰り返することによって声が重ねられていて、大合唱しているように聞こえます。（映画の中でも描かれているようです）
TV出演できないかわりにつくられたというビデオは、世界初のプロモーションビデオと言われていて、メンバーが暗闇の中で並んでいるシーンは大変印象的です。わたしも、ＭＴＶでこのビデオを見たとき、その映像に目が釘付けになりましたね。
Queen の音楽やフレディの声には、聞くものを突き動かすような衝動が込められている気がします。心の根っこの部分を鷲づかみにされる感覚と言ったらいいでしょうか。平穏な心持ちではいられなくなるような、気持ちが高ぶる感じです。Queen の伝説的なライブ・パフォーマンスもその故なのでしょうか。イギリスでは人気が高かった Queen ですが、HIV合併症が元でフレディが死去した1992年には、さらに世界中でクイーンの人気が高まることになり、その後も活動が続いていましたね。
この「Bohemian Rhapsody」の歌詞は、フレディ・マーキュリーが同性愛者であることをカミングアウトした曲だという人もいますが、メンバーのブライアン・メイとロジャー・テイラーは、フレディは歌詞の意味をはっきりと言わなかったといっています。フレディのみぞ知るというところでしょうか。
曲名に加えて、Scaramouche・Galileo figaro・Bismillah!・Beelzebubなど、特徴的な言葉がちりばめられ、楽曲のオペラ風な構造と相まって、圧倒的な世界観で迫ってきます。

mama mia (マンマ・ミーア) というコーラスが耳に残りますが、イタリア語で、”My mother !”＝ Oh, my god !という意味だそうです。なんてこった。 映画も Queen のヒット曲が満載されているようなので、早く見てみたいものです。
