今回は、「愛は偉大なもの The greatest love of all」をピックアップ。
この曲、オリジナルはジョージ・ベンソン George Benson ですが、後にホイットニー・ヒューストン Whitney Houston が歌ってさらに有名になった曲です。
1977年、モハメド・アリの伝記映画 「アリ・ザ・グレイテスト The Greatest 」のオープニングとしてジョージ・ベンソンが歌いました。ちなみに、エンディングで歌われている「I Always Knew I Had It In Me」は、もともとアリの「炎のファイター(アリ・ボマイエ) Ali Bombaye (Zaire Chant) I」というテーマ曲で、アントニオ猪木に贈られ「イノキ・ボンバイエ」となりました。

映画『ボディガード』に主演してドリー・パートンの「I Will Always Love You」を熱唱、スーパー・ボールの国歌独唱などでも有名なホイットニー・ヒューストン。
ホイットニー・ヒューストンの母親シシーはゴスペル歌手、従姉にディオンヌ・ワーウィック、母の友人にアレサ・フランクリンという環境で育った彼女は、自然と歌手の路を選んだようです。そんな自伝的内容の「Greatest Love of All」のミュージックビデオ。ホイットニーが大事にしていた曲だと言われています。

私の好きな映画「スクール・オブ・ロック School of Rock」にもこの歌詞が使われる場面がありました。
主人公が小学校の先生になりすましますが、同僚に教育理念を聞かれると、苦し紛れにこの歌詞の一節を答えるというシーンです。それ歌の文句じゃないと突っ込まれていますね。

作詞は、The Stylistics の「You Are Everything」を書いたリンダ・クリード Linda Creed ですが、リンダ自身が乳がんを患った時に、家族に向けたメッセージとしてこの曲の詞を書いたそうです。1986年4月にリンダは若くして亡くなります。そして、5月に「Greatest Love of All」は、ホイットニー・ヒューストンの歌でナンバーワンヒットとなりました。そういうエピソードを知ると歌詞の内容が深まって感じられます。
