前置き長すぎですが、ビリー・ジョエル 私 ぶろっこりのおすすめは、大ヒットして彼をスターダムに押し上げた「ニューヨーク52番街 52nd Street」以前の作品。エルトン・ジョンと並んで「ザ・ピアノマン」と言うべき美しいピアノの旋律と歌声が発揮された作品たちです。長い不遇の時代の作品と言ってもいいのかもしれません。

ロサンゼルスのピアノラウンジで歌っていたビリーの経験を元にしていて、歌詞中の登場人物は全て実在の人物だと本人も話しています。ジャズ風のピアノソロから始まって、ピアノとハーモニカの有名なイントロへ。そして、サビの「ピアノ弾きよ歌ってくれ。今夜、俺たちのために。メロディーに浸りたい。今夜はそんな気分なんだ。」は、バーの客が声をそろえてコーラスする様をそのまま歌にしています。とても、しゃれていますよね。
人気絶頂期の1977年に撮影されたプロモーションビデオ。典型的なアメリカのバーで演奏するピアノ弾きをビリー本人が演じています。
1985年にリメイクされたビデオ。
