ただ、表面的な意味だけでなく、言葉遊びや深い喩えのような歌詞が綴られているようです。
“Mary Kay” は、化粧品のブランド名。”Mary Jane” は、マリファナのことだそうです。
また、”Mary, Mary quite contrary”は、ひねくれ者のメリーはお庭の様子を聞かれ、育てているお花を他の物に言い換えて答える、というマザーグースからとられています。
